I remember Hawthorne only through the many short stories I was assigned in grade school. Indeed, an ironic medium for otrss writer who devoted so many pages to the idea of eternity! Then, as I scan some of the pages, I begin to see that many of the passages seem unfamiliar.
It is interesting, however, to read what Borges in his 20s had to say about Quevedo and the subtle differences in approach and theme in talking about him in his early 50s.
