Why does Lawrence Grossberg disagree with using the term? He carefully explains by stating an example of how we can? Grossberg points out that in order to grasp the concept of fandom, we must try to discover the distinctions and prove that they exist.

There are two different ways to classify fandom, through culture forms and audience. A fan is reflected as the audience, with fan culture being a form of mass culture. I thought long and hard about what it takes to be a fan. As a fan of K-pop, I am labeled as a fan of popular culture. What differentiates me from being a consumer of mass culture, is the word fan. As a fan, I am selective of what I like; fans have specific areas they are a fan of.

This supports Grossberg? Though he believes the two terms are vaguely similar, the term fan of popular culture is not a synonym for consumer of mass culture. According to Peter Dahlgren, how did industrialization and mass culture change the participants of the public sphere?

How did it lead to a? He believes social structure has a part in determining the participants of the public sphere. Dahlgren questions if everyone in society can be accommodated within the same public sphere, and if such factors like class, gender, and race can be disregarded when looking at the sphere as one.

Apparently, the public sphere subordinates minorities to be discursive and social power of dominant groups. Political judgments made within that public sphere can impartially affect everyone in it, regardless of their biased positions.

Mass culture, being the set of ideas and values that develop from a common exposure to the same media, is bound to be different in different cultures leading to changes in the participation of the sphere. Rather than having one public sphere, there had been a variety of public spheres, each rooted in the experiences that make up the sphere that includes a variety of individuals.

Ideally, Habermas theorizes that the mass media has become the chief institution of the public sphere, and that the sphere exists because of the public. The self-interpretation of the public sphere took shape in the concept of public opinion, and the bourgeois public sphere ultimately came to an end due to economic and structural changes. The boundaries between state and society became indistinct, leading to the refeudalization of society. How does the makeover television genre and television in general replace the nation-state as the agent of making good citizens, according to Ouellette and Hay?

As citizens of a technologically progressed society, we are heavily influenced by what we watch on television or what we are exposed to on the Internet. Ouellette and Hay use Shaq? The specific show gave resources for getting themselves and their loved ones into shape, which was carefully promoted as an effort to?

Ouellette and Hay suggests that the makeover television genre and television in general function in order to make healthy and active citizens as part of a reinvention of the neoliberal government. The idea of being a good citizen is linked to the individual being held responsible for their own governmentality, and that if they are not good citizens the blame is placed on themselves. In an episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Improvement, the show explains of Sweet Alice who is a giver to the community and an example of a good citizen.

Through the show, her home is completely redesigned and the whole neighborhood gets a makeover due to this one good-duty citizen. As a viewer, it makes me want to do good for my community and be a good citizen in hopes to have something like that happen to me as it did for Sweet Alice. As a member of the nation-state, shows like this are replacing us one into good citizens.
